Waverley , at times Pope-Waverley , was an American car brand. There were also five different manufacturers, one after the other, of which the first four belonged to Albert Augustus Pope . All companies were based in Indianapolis , Indiana .
Brand history
In 1898 there was a collaboration, possibly also a merger, between the American Electric Vehicle Company from Chicago in Illinois and the Indiana Bicycle Company from Indianapolis. This Indiana Bicycle Company, which by name had already manufactured bicycles , was part of Pope's empire. From 1898 to 1899, automobiles with the brand name Waverley were built there .
From 1900 to 1901, Pope's American Bicycle Company is considered a manufacturer.
The International Motor Car Company followed from 1901 to 1903 .
Between 1904 and 1908, the Waverley Department existed as a division of the Pope Motor Car Company . Pope changed the brand name to Pope-Waverley , because he also marketed his vehicles from other companies with a double name that began with Pope . Are called Pope-Hartford , Pope-Robinson , Pope-Toledo and Pope-Tribune . In 1908 financial problems arose. The bankruptcy began.
In September 1908, Pope sold what was left of the company to a group of local entrepreneurs. These included WB Cooley, HH Rice, and WC Johnson. They carried out a reorganization. The new company name was Waverley Company . They changed the brand name back to Waverley . Production ended in 1916.
vehicles
Only electric cars were on offer . From 1912 the front of the vehicle was lengthened and given a hood so that the external appearance resembled vehicles with gasoline engines . For most of the years, the range included different models. They differed in the wheelbase of the chassis and in the bodies. At times there were also delivery vans. A catalog from 1907 shows several commercial vehicle models . The following tables show which model was offered in which year with which structure. The specification Front-Drive or Rear-Drive in the years 1914 and 1915 does not refer to the drive axle, but to the position of the driver within the body.
