Ross was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Louis S. Ross was from Newtonville , which is now part of Newton , Massachusetts . At least between 1903 and 1906 he was a racing car driver. In 1903 he bought a car from the Watch City Automobile Company . In 1906 he started producing automobiles. The brand name was Ross . Production ended in 1909. Ross had lost interest and turned to other things.

There was no connection to the Ross Automobile Company , which a few years later also offered automobiles as Ross.

Only steam cars were on offer . They had a steam engine with two cylinders . The engine, boiler and tanks were located in the front under the bonnet . According to the company, this was a novelty in a steam car. The engine output of 25 hp was transmitted to the rear axle via a cardan shaft .

The first model from 1906 had a chassis with a 274 cm wheelbase . It was offered as an open touring car with space for five people. The curb weight was given as about 1270 kg. The original price was 2800 US dollars .

In 1907 a small runabout was added. Its wheelbase was 254 cm.

In 1909, both models had the same wheelbase of 274 cm.

The first car of the Boston Fire Department came from Ross.
