Crest Manufacturing Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The company was based in Cambridge , Massachusetts . There was also a factory in Dorchester . Initially, it produced gasoline engines. In 1900 a prototype of an automobile was created. Series production began in 1901. The brand name was Crestmobile . In December 1904 financial problems became known. Production ended in 1905. According to the company, over 1000 vehicles were built.

In 1905 the Alden Sampson Manufacturing Company from Pittsfield took over the company. Existing Crestmobiles were offered until at least 1906, possibly 1907.

The plant in Dorchester, however, was taken over by Hub Motor Car Exchange .

vehicles

In 1901 there were three models in the range. They had an air-cooled single-cylinder engine that powered the rear axle via a chain. In Model A , the engine had 2 HP , in Model B 3.5 HP and in Model C 5 HP. The wheelbase was 145 cm. They were bodied as open runabouts with two seats. In addition, a tricycle is mentioned, which was offered for a short time but was obviously not in demand.

No changes have been reported for 1902.

From 1903 the vehicles had cardan drive . The weakest engine was omitted. The version with the 3.5 hp engine retained the previous wheelbase. Narrated are Model C as a runabout and Model F as a touring car . In addition, there was the Model D . Its engine developed 5 hp. The chassis had a wheelbase of 183 cm. There were runabouts with two and four seats.

From 1904 to 1905, was a new Model D . The single cylinder engine now developed 8.5 hp. The wheelbase was 193 cm. Two-seat runabouts and four-seat tonneaus were on offer .

Also in 1904 and 1905 a Surrey was presented at motor shows. It had a two-cylinder engine with 15 hp, but did not go into series production.

Europe

O'Halloran Brothers Co. advert for Crestmobile and OHB dated November 1903. The latter is shown; obviously drive chains were still used here.

O'Halloran Brothers from London was on the one hand an importer for England . On the other hand, chassis were obtained from Crest, completed with their own bodies to form complete vehicles and offered as OHB .
