Century Motor Vehicle Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Charles A. Bridgman, Charles Listman, Hiram F. Plumb, Charles F. Saul and William Van Wagoner founded the company in 1900. The seat was in Syracuse , New York . After only prototypes were made in 1900 , series production of automobiles began in 1901. The brand name was Century . Some vehicles were exported to England and sold there as Ophir in 1901 . By November 1901, 60 vehicles had been built. Production ended in early 1903. The bankruptcy followed in January 1904th

There were no affiliations with the Missouri Century Manufacturing Company or Michigan Century Manufacturing Company , which used the same brand name.

One series had an electric motor . The model no. 1 was a two-seat runabout . In 1902 the model No. 2 as a four-seater and the model No. 3 the range as a light commercial vehicle .

Another series were steam cars , which were only produced until 1902. They had two-cylinder - steam engines . The cardan drive was unusual . It existed in 1901 as No. 1 and 1902 both as No. 1 as well as No. 2 with the same superstructures as the electric cars .

In 1902, the Tourist model was added, a vehicle with a gasoline engine . The vehicles were powered by a single-cylinder engine with 7 hp . The wheelbase was 183 cm. One illustration shows a dos-à-dos with space for four people, back to back. The original price was 750 US dollars . For comparison, the Oldsmobile Curved Dash was cheaper at $ 650, but only a two-seater. The Ford Model A with the same wheelbase was more expensive at $ 950 for a tonneau , but had a two-cylinder , 8-horsepower engine.
