Balzer Motor Carriage Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Stephen M. Balzer from Bronx in the US state of New York manufactured motor vehicles from 1894. By 1897 he had completed three vehicles. He announced that 100 more vehicles would be produced by the spring of 1898. To do this, he founded the company in the same city in 1898. The brand name was Balzer . Production ended in 1900. In total, significantly fewer than the announced 100 vehicles were built. One thing still exists.

The unusual thing was the rotary engines . They were three-cylinder engines . The first prototype from 1894 is called the Voiturette . It was shorter than 188 cm and about 94 cm wide. The front wheels were 17 inches tall and the rear 26 inches. The engine developed 10 hp , was mounted in the rear and drove a rear wheel via a three-speed gearbox. Was steered with a steering lever. The body was completely open and had a bench. This vehicle is in the Smithsonian Institution .
