Crompton Motor Carriage Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The company was founded in 1901 in Worcester , Massachusetts . Charles H. Crompton was the president. Initially, the production of electric cars and steam cars was planned. However, the experiments with electric cars were quickly abandoned. In April 1902 the first steam car was ready for testing. In March 1903 the first presentation took place at the Boston Automobile Show . The brand name was Crompton . A fire in May 1905 destroyed the plant. Production ended with that. In total, only a few vehicles were built.

The steam engine had four cylinders . It was mounted in the rear and drove the rear axle via a cardan shaft . In addition to the engine, twelve small steam boilers were arranged on each side . The open runabout offered space for two people. The curved front of the vehicle was similar to the Oldsmobile Curved Dash with a gasoline engine .
