Torbensen Motor Car Company , previously VV Torbensen Company and Torbensen Gear Inc. , was an American manufacturer of automobiles and parts. Other sources use the name Torbensen Gear Company .

Company history

Viggo V. Torbensen came from Denmark . In the USA, he initially worked for De Dion-Bouton Motorette Company and Searchmont Motor . In 1901 he founded the VV Torbensen Company in Newark , New Jersey . He made vehicle parts. In the same year he moved to Bloomfield , changed the company name to Torbensen Gear Inc. and concentrated on the manufacture of gearboxes . In 1902 the production of automobiles began. The brand name was Torbensen .

In 1905 the name was next changed to Torbensen Motor Car Company . Another source cites March 27, 1905, exactly. The focus was still on gearboxes. The manufacture of engines was added. In 1906 the production of passenger cars ended and in 1911 that of commercial vehicles .

On October 25, 1911, the Torbensen Gear & Axle Company was founded as the successor company, which later became the Eaton Corporation .

In 1902 at least one small runabout was built , which was followed by a number of vehicles of unknown size by 1905.

In 1905 there was a model with a self-developed six-cylinder engine . It was air-cooled and made 28 hp . The structure was an open touring car .

A delivery van was also manufactured. It had a three-cylinder engine with 14 hp.
