Chautauqua Motor Company , previously Webb Jay Motor Company , was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Former racing driver Webb Jay founded the Webb Jay Motor Company in Chicago , Illinois in 1908 . His brother Frank Jay was also involved. They sold White Motor Company vehicles . In 1908 they made some automobiles themselves. The brand name was Jay Webb . The company still existed as a car dealer after 1908.

In March 1910, the name was changed to Chautauqua Motor Company when the company moved to Dunkirk , New York State . In January 1911 an advertisement appeared for a passenger car , which was now offered as the Chautauqua Steamer . In February 1911, a truck was presented at the Chicago Automobile Show . One source thinks that they remained prototypes .

The only model was a steam car . It had a steam engine with two cylinders that made 30 hp . The engine power was transmitted to the rear axle via a two-speed gearbox and chains. The open touring car offered space for five people. The original price was 4,000 US dollars .
