Elmer F. Johnson Cycle Works was an American manufacturer of bicycles and automobiles .

Company history

Elmer F. Johnson founded the company in Kalkaska , Michigan in 1863 . He made bicycles. In 1898 an automobile was created that was called Elmer . Series production of automobiles began in 1905. The brand name was Johnson . Motor vehicle production ended in 1906.

It is not known when the company was dissolved.

The first vehicle had a gasoline engine . It drove the rear axle via a two-speed gearbox. A frame made of bicycle tubes served as the basis. The wheels were wire spoke wheels. The vehicle was redesigned in 1901 and again in 1905 when the original engine was replaced with a built-in engine from Cushman Motor Works . The vehicle has been preserved.

Brand name Johnson

These were steam wagons . They were powered by a steam engine . Six of these vehicles were built, the last five of which were sold to local customers.
