Piedmont Motor Car Company was an American automobile manufacturer . The brand name was Piedmont .

description

The company was founded in 1917 in Lynchburg (Virginia) under WA Taylor . Initially, two models were screwed together there, the 4-30 and the 6-40 . The touring car bodies came from the Norwalk Motor Car Company in Martinsburg, West Virginia and were strikingly similar to contemporary Hudson cars . The engine of the 4-30, a four-cylinder in-line engine, came from Lycoming , that of the 6-40, a six-cylinder in-line engine, came from Continental . From 1919 onwards, at least the bodies were made in-house. Both models, which looked very similar, were usually painted green.

In the years 1917–1919, around 500 cars were built each year, with only some of the vehicles being in-house models. In addition, similar vehicles were built for other manufacturers, for example Bush and Marshall in Chicago or Lone Star in Texas . Only from 1920 onwards was there a modest amount of advertising for the products manufactured under its own name. The success left much to be desired; after all, the police in Lynchburg could at least be equipped with Piedmont vehicles.

The company received more and more orders for the production of third-party products from other automobile manufacturers. The production of own models now took a back seat and a failed purchasing policy finally led to bankruptcy in October 1922. The store had accumulated parts worth an impressive $ 225,000. A re-establishment as Virginia Motors, Inc. failed in 1923.

There was no association with the Piedmont Buggy Company , which used the same brand name a few years earlier.
