American Austin Car Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The company was founded in 1929 in the US state of Delaware . However, the plant was located in Butler , Pennsylvania . In 1930 the production of automobiles began. The brand name was American Austin . Measured against the expectations of 100,000 vehicles, sales remained low. A total of around 15,000 vehicles were built. Bankruptcy began in 1932 , but production continued for the time being. In June 1934 the company was dissolved.

In June 1936, Roy Evans founded the successor company American Bantam and continued production from 1937 under its own brand name.

The only model was based on the British Austin 7 . The vehicles were driven by a water-cooled four - cylinder engine with a capacity of 747 cm³ and 15 hp . The wheelbase was only 191 cm. The vehicle was 71 cm shorter and 41 cm narrower than any other American-made automobile. Nevertheless, the original price was a few dollars above the price of a much larger and more powerful Ford Model A . After 1932 the price was lowered significantly.

In 1930 and 1931 there were roadsters , coupé and coupé in luxury versions. 1932 consisted of an assortment of a runabout , a convertible and coupés in the versions standard coupé, luxury coupé and business coupé. Roadsters, coupé, sports coupé and business coupé have been handed down for 1933. In 1934 the range was reduced to standard, luxury coupé and business coupé. There were also box vans for several years .

Production and sales figures

In 1930, 8,558 vehicles were built. Less than 10,000 vehicles had been sold by 1932. 4726 vehicles were built in 1933 and 1057 in the following year.
