Comet Automobile Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

George W. Jagers founded the company in late 1916. The seat was in Chicago , Illinois . Around twelve prototypes were made in early 1917 . The first public presentation was in January 1917 at the Chicago Automobile Show . It was not until August 1917 that series production began at a plant in Decatur , Illinois. The brand name was Comet . In December 1920, serious financial problems began. In 1922, production and marketing ended. The liquidation of the company dragged on until 1924. A total of over 1000 vehicles were built. Some were exported to Belgium .

There was no association with the other U.S. automakers with the same brand names: Hall Automobile Company , Continental Motors Corporation of Buffalo , Comet Cyclecar , General Developing Company , Comet Co., and Comet Motors .

Many parts were bought in. That included the engines. The six-cylinder engines came initially from Lewis and later from the Continental Motors Company . A model with a four-cylinder engine was only added to the range last year .

From 1917 to 1918 there was the Six-50 . The engine developed 50 hp . The wheelbase was 318 cm. The open touring car offered space for five people.

There were no changes in 1919.

In 1920 the vehicle was named Model C-53 . The engine output had risen to 53 hp.

In 1921 it became the Model C-53-2 . The engine now made 55 hp. The vehicle was only available as a five-seater sedan .

In 1922 the previous model was available as a five-seat touring car and as a five- and seven-seat sedan. The Light Four was added . Its four-cylinder engine was specified with 30/32 hp. It was bodied as a touring car with five seats.
