McFarlan Motor Car Company , previously McFarlan Carriage Company , was an American manufacturer of vehicles .

Company history

John B. McFarlan founded the McFarlan Carriage Company in 1856 to manufacture carriages . The seat was in Connersville , Indiana . His grandson Harry started developing an automobile in 1909 . It was launched on the market in late 1909. The brand name was McFarlan . In 1913 the name was changed to McFarlan Motor Car Company .

In 1924 Harry McFarlan fell ill. Long-time partner Burton Barrows now ran the company. In 1928 he died unexpectedly. Production ended with that. A total of 3639 motor vehicles were built . More than 20 vehicles still exist.

Later that year, Errett Lobban Cord took over the assets, facilities and dealer network. He founded the Cord Corporation in 1929 .

Most of the vehicles had six-cylinder engines . They came first from the Wisconsin Motor Manufacturing Company , Buda , the Brownell Motor Company , the Continental Motors Company and from 1916 from Teetor-Hartley .

The vehicles had different bodies such as touring cars , baby tonneau , roadster , runabout , torpedo , coupé , sedan , speedster , submarine , touring roadster, semi-touring car, sedan , town car , berline , landaulet , Pasadena , knickerbocker convertible , Philadelphia berline Continental Landaulet, Country Club Coach , Destroyer , Sport , V Front Sedan , Sport Sedan, Destroyer Touring Car, Sloping Vee Sedan, Straight Front Sedan, Touring Sedan, Landau , Suburban Sedan, Suburban , Cabriolet, Coach Brougham , Sport Touring Car, Brougham, Coach and Sport Phaeton . A list of which bodies were offered in which year for which model can be found in the following table.

In the 1910 model year there was only the 35/40 HP . Its engine was specified with 35/40 hp . The chassis had a 305 cm wheelbase .

In 1911 it became the Model 35-40 . Then there was the model 50-60 . Its engine was specified with 50/60 hp. The wheelbase was 325 cm.

In 1912 there was the model 40-45 with a 315 cm wheelbase and the model 55-60 with a 325 cm wheelbase. The model names were again an indication of the engine performance.

In 1913 there were three models in the range. 57 HP and 63 HP had the short wheelbase of 315 cm and 66 HP had the long wheelbase of 325 cm.

The Series T appeared in 1914 . The engine was now specified with 38.4 hp. The wheelbase was lengthened to 335 cm.

In 1915 this model remained unchanged. Added to this was the Series X . Its engine was specified with 48.6 hp. The wheelbase was also 335 cm.

1916 was the only known change that was specified for the Series T 38 hp.

In 1917 the range consisted of the Type 127 and Type 135 , the latter being more expensive. The engine was specified with 48.6 hp. The wheelbase was 345 cm.

In 1918 the Type 127 remained in the range. The more expensive model was now called the Type 138 .

No changes have been reported for 1919.

The Model 90 appeared in 1920 . The engine made 80 hp. The wheelbase remained at 345 cm.

In 1921 the newly developed Twin-Valve Six came on the market. He had a self-made engine with three spark plugs per cylinder . The engine output was specified as 120 hp. The wheelbase was 356 cm.

There were no changes in 1922.

In 1923 the Twin-Valve Six got a slightly longer wheelbase of 358 cm.

In 1924 the single-valve six was launched as a cheaper model. The 75 hp engine came from Wisconsin. The wheelbase was 356 cm. This model could not establish itself on the market. For the Twin-Valve Six , a wheelbase of 356 cm has again been handed down.

In 1925, both models remained unchanged.

In 1926, the wheelbase of the Single-Valve Six was shortened to 323 cm. In the same year the Line-8 appeared as a replacement . He had an eight-cylinder - inline engine from Lycoming with 70 hp. The wheelbase was 333 cm. The twin-valve six remained unchanged.

In 1927 the output of the eight-cylinder model was increased to 79 hp.

In 1928 there were no more changes.

In addition, three fire engines were built for the local fire department and a few hearses .

Motorsport

In 1910, two vehicles took part in races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and achieved good results.
