Merit Motor Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles . Another source uses the name Merit Motor Car Company .

Company history

The company was founded in Cleveland , Ohio in 1920 . Henry J. Berger, who owned a department store , was involved, his brother William Berger, the pharmacist Bert J. Landefeld and his brother Al Landefeld, who worked as a sales manager for the company. They started producing automobiles in 1921. The brand name was Merit . The first vehicle was supposed to be presented at the New York Automobile Show in January 1921. However, this vehicle burned down when an attempt was made to use a heater to speed up the drying of the paint. The first vehicle was shown a little later at the Cleveland Automobile Show . The vehicle was praised. However, there was an economic crisis in the US at the time .

Production ended in 1922. 67 vehicles were built in the first year and 82 in the second. In total, that's 149 vehicles. The last vehicles were sold in early 1923 as model year 1923.

In the first year there was the Model B . It had a four-cylinder engine of Walker . The chassis had a wheelbase of 328 cm . There was a choice of a coupé with two seats and a touring car with four seats. The new price was 2245 US dollars each .

Model BC followed in 1922 . The six-cylinder engine now came from the Continental Motors Company . 82.55 mm bore and 114.3 mm stroke resulted in 3670 cm³ displacement . The engine was specified with 25.35 hp . The wheelbase was now only 302 cm. The coupe was taken over. The touring car now had five seats. There was also a two-seater roadster . The vehicles initially cost dollars in 1985. The prices could be lowered in March 1922 to 1,895 dollars.
