Saxon Motor Car Corporation , previously Saxon Motor Company , was an American manufacturer of automobiles . The name Saxon Motor Car Company can also be found in an advertisement .

Company history

Hugh Chalmers of Chalmers Motor Car Company founded Saxon Motor Company in 1913 . The seat was in Detroit , Michigan . He appointed Harry W. Ford, who previously worked for Chalmers, as president. In December 1913 the production of automobiles began in the plant of the dissolved Demot Car Company . The brand name was Saxon . 3000 vehicles were produced in the first three months. At the beginning of 1915 it turned out that the plant was too small. As a result, production was relocated to the former Abbott-Detroit plant in the same city.

In late 1915, Harry Ford bought Hugh Chalmers' shares and reorganized. The new company name was Saxon Motor Car Corporation . In 1916, the company was ranked 8th among US automakers with 21,134 vehicles produced. 7th place was reached in 1917. That year there were expansion plans that led to the construction of a new plant. This caused financial problems. Harry Ford also got sick. He resigned as president in December 1917 and died in 1918.

Benjamin Gotfredson was his successor. Material shortages due to the First World War led to a decrease in production. The new plant had to be sold to General Motors in 1919 . In the same year Gotfredson withdrew.

The new president was CA Pfeffer, who also previously worked for Chalmers. In April 1921 the department that manufactured spare parts for previous models was sold. Most of the proceeds were used to offset liabilities.

At the beginning of 1922, part of the Apex Motor Corporation plant in Ypsilanti was acquired. Only a few vehicles were made here. In the summer of 1922, Pfeffer withdrew. There was no successor. In the same year the company was dissolved.

From 1913 to 1915, was only the Model A . It had a water-cooled four-cylinder engine of Ferro . 66.675 mm bore and 101.6 mm stroke resulted in 1419 cm³ displacement and 12.1 hp . It drove the rear axle via a cardan shaft . The transmission initially had two and later three gears. The chassis had a wheelbase of 244 cm . The structure was a roadster with two seats. The original price was 395 US dollars . In terms of price, the vehicle was able to compete with the primitive cycle cars of the time. The sales figures were a great success.

In 1916 it became the Model 14 . A two-seater winter top roadster complemented the range. The model S-2 was new . It had a six-cylinder engine from the Continental Motors Company . He was specified with 19.84 hp. The wheelbase was 284 cm. There was a choice of a three-seater roadster and a five-seater touring car , the latter also with a winter top .

In 1917 the models were given new names. The smaller was Model 85 R mentioned. It was only available as a two-seater roadster. The larger was called Model S 4 T . The engine was now specified with 20 hp. Narrated are a Chummy -Roadster with four seats and a sedan with five seats.

The four-cylinder model was discontinued in 1918. The other was now called the Model Y-18-T . A five-seat touring car supplemented the superstructures available.

The sedan was discontinued in 1919. The roadster now got by without the addition of Chummy .

In 1920 this model remained unchanged. The duplex 125 was new . Its four-cylinder engine with OHV valve timing came either from Root & Vandervoort Engineering Company or from Gray . It made 45 hp. The wheelbase was also 284 cm. The car was available as a touring car and a limousine, each with five seats.

The six-cylinder model was discontinued in 1921. The Duplex 125 was now additionally as Foursome - coupe with four seats and Blackstone -Tourenwagen with five seats available.

In 1922 two and three-seater roadsters were added. The coupé lost its addition and only offered space for three people.
