Reliance Motor Truck Company , previously Reliance Automobile Manufacturing Company and Reliance Motor Car Company , was an American manufacturer of motor vehicles .

Company history

The Reliance Automobile Manufacturing Company in 1903 in Detroit in Michigan founded. In 1904 the production of passenger cars began . The brand name was Reliance . The designers were EO Abbott and WK Ackerman, who previously worked for Cadillac .

In 1904 there was a reorganization. One source cites underfunding as the reason. The new company name was Reliance Motor Car Company . JM Mulke initially headed the company, which was replaced a little later by Fred O. Paige. In 1906 commercial vehicles were added. In the same year, the car production ended.

General Motors took over the company in 1907 . From 1908 it was called Reliance Motor Truck Company . It was dissolved in 1911. Reliance, along with Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, is considered the forerunner of GMC .

In 1904 there was only the 15 HP . Like all cars of this brand, it had a two-cylinder engine . It made 15 hp . The chassis had a wheelbase of 218 cm . The open touring car with five seats offered side entry , making it one of the first of its kind. Orlo and Peerless also offered such bodies in 1904.

The 18/22 HP followed in 1905 . Its engine was specified with 18/22 hp. The extended wheelbase of 234 cm enabled a five-seater structure, which was called the Roi-des-Belges - Tonneau .

In 1906 the range consisted of two models. With the CD model , 133.35 mm bore and 139.7 mm stroke resulted in 3902 cm³ displacement and 22 hp. The wheelbase measured 234 cm. The Model E had an engine with 149.225 mm bore, 127 mm stroke, 4442 cm³ displacement and 28 hp. The wheelbase was 277 cm. Both models were bodied as five-seater touring cars.

Trucks and buses have been handed down as commercial vehicles . They had two-stroke engines .
