De Witt Motor Vehicle Company , previously De Witt Automobile Company , was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Born in Switzerland, Virgil L. De Witt gained experience in automobile construction at the WH Kiblinger Company . In 1908 he founded his own company in North Manchester , Indiana . On April 15, 1909, the first vehicle was ready. The brand name was De Witt . Other sources write DeWitt without a space. From June 1909 up to four vehicles a day were built and sales were good. A fire destroyed the plant on May 5, 1910. Then production ended.

A total of around 200 vehicles were built, one of which still exists.

The only model was a highwheeler and was similar to the Kiblinger models. A two-cylinder engine with 13.6 hp was mounted under the seat and drove the rear axle. The chassis had a wheelbase of 198 cm . The open structure offered space for two people.
