Southern Motor Car Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

EM Pavey had made some prototypes in Houston , Texas in 1908 . In the same year he found financiers in this city and founded the automobile production company. The brand name was Dixie . A former church served as a factory . Sales in the first year did not go well. A revised range of models should improve the situation. When his Houston bank closed and he lost money, he ran into serious financial problems. Production ended in early 1910. A total of 17 vehicles were built.

There was no association with the Dixie Manufacturing Company , which later used the same brand name.

The 1908 junior was a highwheeler . Its air-cooled two-cylinder engine was specified with 10/12 hp . It was mounted under the seat and drove the rear axle via a friction gear and two chains. The chassis had a wheelbase of 183 cm . A body was mounted on it as a runabout . Sales remained minimal, so that the model was abandoned after a year without replacement.

The Flier also came from 1908. It was built low. It had a four-cylinder engine with 24 hp, a two-speed gearbox and cardan drive . The wheelbase was 259 cm. It was available as a runabout and a five-seat touring car . In retrospect, the new price of 2000 US dollars is described as too high.

The tourist from 1909 to 1910 replaced the Flier . The engine output had been increased to 30 hp. The extended wheelbase of 279 cm made longer bodies possible. Runabouts and touring cars were again on offer. The original price could be reduced to 1500 US dollars.
