Standard Motor Construction Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The company was founded in 1904 in Jersey City , New Jersey . The production of automobiles began at the plant of the dissolved US Long Distance Automobile Company . The brand name was officially Standard , unofficially in the first year also Standard Tourist US Long Distance . The company acquired a license for the Selden patent and therefore had no legal problems with George Baldwin Selden to expect.

Production ended in the summer of 1905. The company was dissolved. Edward Ringwood Hewitt acquired the Selden license and used it from 1906 in his Hewitt Motor Company .

Unlike the US Long Distance cars, which had small one- , two-, and three-cylinder engines , the standard cars had four-cylinder engines . They made 25 hp . The engine power was transmitted to the rear axle via a three-speed gearbox and a chain.

In 1904 there was the tourist . It had a chassis with a 241 cm wheelbase . The structure was an open touring car . It offered space for five people. The original price was 3,000 US dollars .

The 25 HP followed in 1905 . The wheelbase has been extended to 277 cm. The touring car now cost $ 3,500. There was also a landaulet for $ 3900.
