Backus Water Motor Company was an American manufacturer of engines and automobiles .

Company history

Rodman and Oscar J. Backus founded the company in the early 1870s. The seat was in Newark , New Jersey . They made engines from the 1880s. In February 1903, a vehicle was presented for the first time at an exhibition in New York City . The brand name was Backus . In 1904 the car production ended. It is unknown when the company, renamed Backus Manufacturing Company in 1893 , was dissolved.

The only surviving model was a runabout . A single-cylinder engine with 10 hp powered the vehicle. Was steered with a steering lever. The vehicle could be started from the seat. The original price was 1,100 US dollars . For comparison, the Ford Model A with a two-cylinder engine was only $ 850. One source thinks that the price was way too high and therefore it was not successful.
