Cloughley Motor Vehicle Company , previously Cloughley Automobile Manufacturing Company , was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Robert H. Cloughley worked on an automobile from 1891. In 1896 the first steam car was ready. In April 1901 he founded the Cloughley Automobile Manufacturing Company in his hometown of Cherryvale , Kansas . Small-scale production began here. The brand name was Cloughley . The owner of the Tannehill Manufacturing Company bought the first vehicle. In early 1903, the company moved to Parsons , Kansas and renamed the Cloughley Motor Vehicle Company . Production ended in the same year 1903.

The 1896 steam car was the first of its kind to be built west of the Mississippi River , according to a source . Cloughley used it as a taxi . The steam boiler was mounted under the rear seats. The build was a Surrey . It is unclear whether more taxis were made by 1901.

From 1902 to 1903 there was the Steam model . It was also bodied as a Surrey. The steam engine had two cylinders and developed 8 hp .

In 1903 two models with gasoline engines added to the range. They had two-cylinder engines . The power was given as 9 hp for the weaker model and 12 hp for the more powerful model. The superstructures did not differ from the steam wagons.
