Woods Motor Vehicle Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The company was founded in Chicago , Illinois in early 1899 . The aim was to compete with the Electric Vehicle Company . The company acquired patents from Edgar Woods, who started selling electric cars as Clinton E. Woods in 1897 and who was also superintendent for the company for a while. In 1899 the production of automobiles began. The brand name was Woods .

In 1901 bankruptcy began , which was survived in 1902. Jay Dixon Chappell took over the company in July 1902. Now trucks and buses were also built . In 1905 Louis Burr became president. A new plant was built in which the annual production could be tripled.

Production ended in 1918. A total of over 13,000 vehicles were built .

vehicles

Initially, only electric cars were manufactured. Initially, the electric motor was mounted in the area of the rear axle. From 1903, the cars had a front hood that resembled the hoods of vehicles with gasoline engines . The batteries were underneath . Two electric motors, each with an output of 2.5 hp, propelled the vehicles via a four-speed gearbox. The more modern design as a tonneau with a rear door was also similar to the competition with a gasoline engine.

Between 1905 and 1907 there was a model in the range that was called the Gasoline Car . It had a four-cylinder engine with 40 hp. Each 127 mm bore and stroke resulted in 6435 cm³ displacement . Whether these vehicles also had an electric motor and were therefore hybrid electric vehicles has not been clearly clarified in the literature. With 38 vehicles in 1905, 103 the following year and 114 in 1907, these cars were less successful than the electric cars.

From 1908 to 1916 there were only electric cars. Over time, they lost market share, especially due to their limited reach .

In 1915, the development of vehicles with hybrid drives began. The market launch for the 1917 model year took place in the summer of 1916. They had a self-made four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. The electric motor propelled the vehicles up to a speed of 24 km / h, above that the gasoline engine. From June 1917, a four-cylinder engine was used by the Continental Motors Company . The vehicle concept was not yet fully developed. There were a number of warranty cases. In 1918 there were 1,300 orders, but only 628 vehicles could be produced.
