Matthews Motor Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The company was founded in 1906 in Camden , New Jersey . In the same year the production of automobiles began. The brand name was Sovereign , unofficially also Matthews . In 1906 or 1907 the Jones-Corbin Automobile Company was taken over. Production ended in 1907.

As far as known, only the Model M was in the range. It had a four-cylinder engine with water cooling . A bore of 139.7 mm and a stroke of 152.4 mm resulted in a displacement of 9344 cc . The engine output is 40, 45 and 48 hp . The engine drove the rear axle via a four-speed gearbox and two chains. The chassis had a 305 cm wheelbase . The only body shape was an open touring car with eight seats. The body was made of aluminum .
