The Pilliod Motor Company was a short-lived American automobile manufacturer in the mid-1910s. The company manufactured mid-range automobiles with valve motors of its own design. The brand name was Pilliod .

Company history

The Pilliod Motor Company was founded in 1915 by Charles J. Pilliod . The company was based at 1212 Oakwood Avenue in Toledo . A prototype was shown at the local motor show in February 1915. Its specialty was the first valve motor built in the USA. His eight-cylinder -Schiebermotor was not only the first of its kind in the US, at the same time he was one of the first with an engine block made of aluminum . Pilliod himself was responsible for the construction of the V-engine . The cylinder bank angle was 90 °, the cooled turntables were arranged on the side of the cylinders. The engine had extensive pressure lubrication and thermosiphon cooling .

The car did not go into series production in this form. Instead, the Pilliod Model F appeared at the end of 1915 , a four-cylinder version made of aluminum with similar design features. The engine weighed only 390 lb (177 kg) and its power is reported to be 27 HP. Additional information is missing, so it is not clear whether this is measured (bhp) or calculated information. The latter was a widespread performance indicator as the NACC rating , which was used by the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce at the time and was based on the cylinder bore .

The only body variant available from the factory was a five-seater touring , the wheelbase was 120 inches (3048 mm). The vehicle cost 1,485 dollars .

As early as June 1916, the Pilliod Motor Company had to file for bankruptcy; Assets of $ 9,559 were offset by debt of $ 30,320. The company was dissolved. Charles Pilliod remained connected to vehicle construction as an engineer.

Remarks

  1. This was a predecessor formula for SAE-PS . The NACC was an association of the automotive industry founded in 1913 and the successor to the ALAM ( Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers ), which in 1903 was the first to introduce these standards in the US automotive industry. The imprecise method for measuring performance allowed comparative values with other manufacturers for the first time and was used by the RAC in Great Britain for allocation to a tax class.
