Puritan Motor Car Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Albert N. Locke made engines, transmissions and axles with his Locke Regulator Company . His first steam car was built in June 1902 . In the same month he founded the separate company for vehicle manufacture and marketing as well as a car dealership . Charles S. Smith became president and Joseph B. Dow became treasurer. The seat was in Salem , Massachusetts . They began manufacturing automobiles at the Locke Regulator Company plant. The brand name was Puritan .

In 1904 there were plans to produce vehicles with gasoline engines . These were not implemented. Instead, Waddington & Sons vehicles were imported from England . Production ended in 1905.

Only steam cars were manufactured . They had a steam engine with two cylinders that made 6 hp . It drove the rear axle via a chain. The chassis had a wheelbase of 183 cm . The setup was a runabout with two seats. Unusual for its time was the gas pedal for foot operation and the steering wheel on a collapsible steering column , to facilitate entry and exit.

A 1902 vehicle with British registration M 166 was on display at Levens Hall in Cumbria , England in 2005 . It was put up for auction on October 8, 2014 and sold for £ 46,480 . According to the auction house, there were two vehicles of this brand in the UK at the time .
