Sphinx Motor Car Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

HR Averill was a sales manager for the Pullman Motor Car Company for seven years . In April 1914 he gave up the post. Then he looked for sponsors for his own car project. In September 1914 he founded the company in York , Pennsylvania . He moved into the factory of the former commercial vehicle manufacturer Hart-Kraft Motor Car Company . In the same year the production of automobiles began. The brand name was Sphinx . The designer was ET Gilliard.

In July 1915 there were rumors of the company's name being changed to DuPont Motor Car Company and the introduction of the DuPont brand name . It is unclear whether this happened. In any case, in October 1915 the 1916 models were announced again as the Sphinx.

123 vehicles were built by the end of 1915 and 228 in 1916. Production ended in October 1916. In total, that's 351 vehicles.

The Bell Motor Car Company took over part of the plant.

The vehicles had a four-cylinder engine from Lycoming . A bore of 85.725 mm and a stroke of 127 mm resulted in a displacement of 2932 cc . The engine was rated at 18 hp . The transmission had three gears. The chassis had a wheelbase of 284 cm . There was a choice of touring cars with five seats and roadsters with two seats.

In 1915 the vehicles were called Model A-15 and the following year Model B-16 .
