AO Smith Corporation is a US company.

prehistory

Charles Jeremiah Smith founded Charles J. Smith-Machinists in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , in 1874 . When two of his sons later helped out, the company's name was changed to CJ Smith and Sons . From 1899 frames for bicycles were made . Around the turn of the century, some automobiles were made, but they remained prototypes and were not marketed. In 1902 chassis for cars were added. The client was initially Peerless Motor Car Corporation , later Cadillac , Oldsmobile and Packard .

One of the sons, Arthur O. Smith, changed its name to AO Smith Company in 1904 . In 1914, the production rights for the Wall Auto Wheel were acquired by AW Wall from England . This drive unit has been revised and sold in the thousands. The American Motor Vehicle Company used it to power their four-wheeled vehicles. AO Smith took over the rights to this vehicle.

Company history

The company was founded on November 11, 1916 in the same city as a successor company. In the same month the production of automobiles began. The brand name was Smith Flyer . Vehicle production ended in 1919. Briggs & Stratton continued production under its own name.

After that, the company was active in various industries. Hot water tanks were added in 1936. The company is still working in this area today.

The Smith Flyer was a small vehicle. It had four wheels, but with the Auto Wheel a fifth wheel on the rear for propulsion.
