From 1915 onwards, his newly founded Chevrolet Motor Company of St. Louis produced complete vehicles under a license from Chevrolet. During the First World War he sold this company to General Motors .
In 1919, he and his sons founded the new company in St. Louis. He became Chairman of the Board, Russell Gardner Jr. President, and Fred Gardner Vice President. Automobile production began at the end of 1919. The brand name was Gardner . Sales were good. The company was profitable until 1927. In 1929 there were contracts with Sears and Ruxton that did not lead to a production.
Passenger car production ended in 1931 . Hearse was made until 1932.
