Tarkington Motor Car Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Pehr August Peterson ran the Mechanics Machine Company in Rockford , Illinois . He made vehicle parts for General Motors . A conversation with William Durant in 1918 gave him the idea of ​​manufacturing automobiles himself. In 1919 he recruited J. Arthur Tarkington, who had extensive automotive experience with the Haynes Automobile Company , Rutenber Motor Company , Stoddard-Dayton and Kissel Motor Car Company . In January 1920 the company was founded in the same city. The factory was located near the Mechanics Machine Company. In 1921 the press was made aware of the new company. The first prototype was created in 1922 . In early 1923, it was launched at an automobile show in Chicago . The brand name was Taft .

The high capital requirement for series production was underestimated. The company was dissolved on June 1, 1923. A total of six vehicles were built.
