Westcott Motor Car Company
The Westcott Motor Car Company was an American automobile manufacturer from 1909 to 1916 in Richmond (Indiana) and 1925 and 1916 in Springfield (Ohio) was established.
history
It was founded as the Westcott Carriage Company in 1896 by Burton J. Westcott . The company made wagons. In 1909 Westcott decided to get into the automotive business, but that year only built an open "Motor Buggy". From 1910 onwards, roadsters and touring cars with four-cylinder engines were produced by the Rutenber Motor Company . Another source states that the engines came from the Continental Motors Company . Three complete cars were built per day and the delivery time was six months. In 1911, a Westcott took part in the Indianapolis 500 race but was eliminated due to an accident.
In 1913 the company brought out its first six-cylinder model, from 1916 only six-cylinder with Continental engines were built. In the same year Westcott moved to Springfield, Ohio to the larger premises of the former American Seeding Machine Company . As many Westcott automobiles were built in 1920 as before or after, 1,850 in one year. In 1921, Burton Westcott was elected mayor of the city. The Westcott was touted as "The Car with the Longer Life" (Eng .: "The car that lives longer"). In 1923 the company brought out a car called "The Closure", a touring car whose sturdy side panels could be removed in summer. In the following year, four-wheel brakes were introduced into series production.
In January 1925 the company was insolvent and had to file for bankruptcy. Although the goodwill exceeded the total debt, Westcott could no longer pay the debt of US $ 825,000. Burton Westcott died in January 1926.
Burton Westcott was also a client of the architect Frank Lloyd Wright , who designed him a prairie-style house. This Westcott House in Springfield, Ohio has been under renovation since 2004.
