Gearless Motor Corporation was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The company was founded in November 1919 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania . Duncan MacDonald, who held patents on steam cars , became president. William H. Edmundson was chief engineer. Frank E. McClintock, Paul Moscou, SH Smith and Raymond R. Stearns were also involved. They started producing automobiles in 1919. The brand name was Gearless . The first five vehicles were built by November 1920. Then MacDuncan founded the MacDonald Steam Automotive Corporation in Garfield . A source states that he left the company to do so. Another source says he ran both companies in parallel. Gearless production continued on a small scale until mid-1922 or 1923.

In May 1923, four company executives were charged. Three of them were convicted in January 1924, including MacDonald.

There was no association with the Gearless Motor Car Company , which used the same brand name a few years earlier.

Only steam cars were on offer. Two separate steam engines , each with two cylinders , produced a total of 65 hp . Each drove one of the rear wheels. The chassis had a wheelbase of 320 cm . Are Narrated touring car with five seats and Roadster with three seats. Wooden wheels and wire spoke wheels were available.
