Brand history

Charles Minshall was President of the Standard Wheel Company of Terre Haute , Indiana . In 1902 he commissioned his technician Claude E. Cox to design an automobile . On February 12, 1903, the first prototype was ready. The production of automobiles began. The brand name was Overland . In January 1905, production was relocated to another company's facility in Indianapolis .

David M. Parry took over the automotive division and founded the Overland Automobile Company on March 31, 1906 . The company was hit hard by the economic crisis of 1907. The dealer John North Willys from Elmira , New York, took over and continued production. He expanded strongly and multiplied the production numbers.

In 1909 Willys took over shares in the Marion Motor Car Company from Indianapolis and the plant of the Pope Motor Car Company in Toledo , Ohio . In 1909 he founded the Willys-Overland Company in this city . He continued production and kept the brand name for the time being. He later also introduced the Willys-Knight and Willys brands .

In 1926 the brand name Overland was given up. The name reappeared in 1939, but only as a model name for Willys.

vehicles

The first Model 13 from 1903 to 1904 had a single-cylinder engine and had a runabout body.

The following Model 15 , Model 16 and Model 17 had a two-cylinder engine and were also runabouts.

Then followed many models with a four-cylinder engine .

Model 34 , Model 82, and Model 86 had a six-cylinder engine .

In the case of the vehicles from 1917 to 1919, the model designation shows whether they had a four or six cylinder engine.

The Model 93 was the last model with a six-cylinder engine.
