Illinois Electric Vehicle and Transportation Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

On April 15, 1899 foundation plans were reported. According to a newspaper report in The New York Times on May 5, 1899, the foundation was announced for the next day on May 4, 1899. Participants were William L. Elkins Junior and Martin Maloney of Philadelphia , Isaac L. Rice of New York City of the Electric Storage Battery Company, and Charles E. Yerkes. It was to become a division of the Electric Automobile Company . The seat was in Chicago , Illinois . The production of automobiles in cooperation with the Siemens-Halske Electric Company began in 1899 at the earliest, which a source also confirms. Two other sources mention 1897. The brand name was Illinois Electric . Most of the vehicles were rented and rarely sold. In October 1899 30 vehicles had already been completed. Production ended in 1901.

Only electric cars were on offer . The vehicles with bodies as Hansom and Brougham had front-wheel drive and steered rear wheels. Stanhope and Runabout , on the other hand, had steered front wheels and rear-wheel drive.
