The Knox Automobile Company was an American automobile manufacturer in Springfield, Massachusetts , 1900 to 1914. Knox also built trucks and manufactured tractors until 1924.

description

From 1900 a three-wheeled runabout with two seats and an air-cooled single-cylinder engine was first produced. One of the first copies was bought by the journalist Charles Yale Knight , who later became known for the invention of the sleeve valve motor .

The 1904 Knox was also a runabout. The horizontally mounted air-cooled single-cylinder engine was installed in the middle of the car and made 8 bhp (5.9 kW). The car was advertised as Waterless Knox , but was also nicknamed Old Porcupine because its cylinder was equipped with 50 mm long needles for cooling. A two-speed planetary gear was connected to the engine. The car was built on a frame made of angle steel, weighed 839 kg, had leaf springs on the side and two seats. It cost US $ 1,350.

In comparison, the Ford Model F cost US $ 2000, the FAL US $ 1750, the Cole 30 and Colt Runabout each cost US $ 1500, the Oakland 40 US $ 1,600 and the Enger 40 2000, - US $, while the high- volume model Oldsmobile Curved Dash was sold for only US $ 650, the Western Gale Model A for US $ 500 and the Brush Runabout for US $ 485.

A larger, in-line two- cylinder, Knox Tonneau model with 16 bhp (11.8 kW) was also made and sold for US $ 2,000. Six-cylinder models were also produced from 1910.

At the end of 1912, the settlement procedure was opened through the company and in May 1914 the automobile production was stopped. In 1919 came the merger with the Militor Corporation , a motorcycle manufacturer also based in Springfield. Plans to reissue a car failed, but tractors were still being made until 1924. Then the company had to be closed for good due to the poor economic situation.
