Stanley Manufacturing Company was an American manufacturer of sewing machines and automobiles .
Company history
The company was founded in Lawrence , Massachusetts in 1882 . In 1899 Frank F. Stanley ran the company. He started with the production of automobiles. The license came from the Whitney Motor Wagon Company . The brand name was initially Stanley-Whitney , but was changed to McKay in 1899 . In 1900, at least one vehicle was presented at the first American Motor Show in Madison Square Garden in New York City . 25 vehicles were built by the end of the year. Vehicle production ended in early 1902. Sewing machines were then built.
The company should not be confused with the Stanley Motor Carriage Company , which also manufactured steam cars.
