Willoughby Company was an American manufacturer of body shells and vehicles . It has been renamed several times.

Company history

EA Willoughby Carriage & Sleigh Works was founded in Rome , New York State, in 1893 . In March 1897 a fire destroyed the plant.

On March 30, 1897, Willoughby took over the Utica Carriage Company , which was founded on March 20, 1893 and in 1897 was in bankruptcy . The seat was moved to Utica , New York. The new company name was Willoughby's Utica Carriage Company . The production of carriages , which both companies had operated, continued.

In 1898, William H. Owen was accepted as a partner. The company was renamed the Willoughby-Owen Company . In 1899 the Columbia Automobile Company ordered 135 bodies for their electric cars. After completing this order, the company began producing automobiles in 1901 . The brand name was Willoughby , possibly with the addition of Electric . In 1902 the production of complete motor vehicles ended .

On January 28, 1903, the last name change to Willoughby Company was known. The company continued to manufacture car bodies. The liquidation followed in 1938.
