Hudson Motor Car Co. is a former American automobile company that existed from 1909 to 1954. In 1954, Hudson merged with Nash Motors to form American Motors Corporation (AMC).

history

The Hudson Motor Car Company was founded in Detroit in 1909 . It was named after Joseph Lowthian Hudson , who raised the start-up capital for the company. The company soon acquired a reputation as an innovative automobile manufacturer. The following standard equipment features appeared for the first time in vehicles of the Hudson brand:

By the end of the 1930s, Hudson had worked its way up to third place on the American manufacturer list with up to 300,000 vehicles a year. In 1929, only Ford and Chevrolet made more cars.

Cheaper vehicles were brought out under the name Essex (until 1931) and Terraplane (from 1932). In 1954 the company was merged with Nash Motors to form the American Motors Corporation . The Hudson models - all technically obsolete at the time - were discontinued immediately after the merger.

Motorsport

In the 1950s, Hudson was a popular brand in the NASCAR series; Dick Rathmann in particular relied on a Hudson Hornet in all of his 128 races between 1951 and 1958 and was able to achieve 13 victories and as many pole positions .

Trivia

Due to the widespread use of the brand, John Steinbeck chose the Hudson Super Six as his protagonist's vehicle in the novel The Fruits of Wrath .

In the Disney / Pixar film " Cars ", the character of Doc Hudson is played by a Hudson Hornet.

The first car Hoke Miss Daisy drove around in was a Hudson Super Eight .
