Newport Coachworks Inc. was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

J. Alan Rowland founded the company on November 22, 1978 in Santa Ana , California . In 1979 the production of automobiles began. The designer was Ernest Kanzler. On April 2, 1979, the first public presentation took place at an automobile show in New York. The brand name was Chancellor . 250 vehicles were planned. Vehicles were still made in 1981. Production ended in the 1980s.

The only model was a 1950s-style luxury vehicle. A chassis from the Mercury Cougar , which was extended to 306 cm, formed the basis. The front of the vehicle was made of fiberglass . The passenger cell came from the Opel GT . The spare wheel on the rear of the coupé was striking . The vehicle length was 526 cm. A V8 engine from the Ford concern with 5700 cm³ displacement (351 cubic inches ) drove the vehicles.
