The Carbon Motors Corporation was an American automobile company, specifically to the development of the police vehicle Carbon E7 was founded. It was founded in Los Angeles in 2003 by Stacy Dean Stephens, a former police officer and William Santana Li, a former manager at Ford. The company moved to Atlanta in 2006 , where they continued to develop their products and attract new investors. In July 2009, the company relocated its headquarters to Connersville , Indiana , to invest $ 350 million in remodeling a previous Visteon facility

On March 22, 2010, Carbon Motors signed a contract with BMW for the delivery of 240,000 six-cylinder diesel engines, which were to be manufactured in the Steyr engine plant .

Carbon E7

The Carbon E7 was to be the first vehicle that should have been manufactured solely as a patrol car. The delivery should start from 2013 at a price of 50,000 dollars. A 3-liter diesel engine was planned as the drive. 240,000 of these engines should have been supplied by BMW . The engine is installed in the BMW 330d and 530d, among others. Carbon Motors was founded specifically for the development of this vehicle.

The E7 should only be sold to law enforcement and similar government agencies. The prototype was presented in 2008 on the "Pure Justice Tour". It was co-designed by American police officers in order to create a vehicle that meets the requirements of the police. The company stipulated that in order not to let the vehicle fall into private hands, an authority that wants the E7 to retire from service, it may only be sold on to another police authority or returned to the factory for slaughter.

Carbon Motor announced that the purchase price would be “competitive”, especially with regard to upgrading a conventional vehicle with police-specific equipment and the service life of each vehicle. The Carbon E7 is designed for a mileage of 250,000 miles (equivalent to approx. 400,000 kilometers), compared to 75,000 (approx. 120,000 kilometers) to 120,000 miles (193,000 kilometers) for a conventional patrol car.

The planned dimensions of the Carbon E7 were: Length: 5.080 m; Width: 1,982 m; Height: 1.631 m; Weight: 1.8 t; Wheelbase: 3,099 m.

Planned equipment

According to Carbon Motors, the E7 should have numerous standard and optional equipment features:

  • Bulletproof front doors and dashboard
  • Air-conditioned front seats optimized for police equipment
  • Head-Up Display
  • backup camera
  • Starting the engine from a remote control
  • The engine can be operated for a long time at idle and in extreme weather conditions (heat and cold)
  • Driver-specific smart key (intelligent vehicle key)
  • 360 degree outdoor surveillance with automatic video recording
  • programmable license plate recognition software
  • Audio and video surveillance of the rear seat bench
  • Safe storage for weapons you are carrying
  • Rear bench optimized for carrying people who are handcuffed
  • The accidental disembarkation of suspects is effectively made more difficult
  • The back seat can be easily cleaned with a high pressure cleaner
  • Reinforcements on the front bumper to ram suspects

  • special seats designed for use with personal equipment, equipped with heating and cooling

The end of carbon motors

On March 7, 2012, according to media reports, a requested loan of $ 310 million was not approved by the US Department of Energy. On March 31, 2013, the lease for the Connersville factory expired and was not renewed. Parts of the factory facilities were dismantled. At about the same time, the company website and the YouTube channel were taken offline. Finally, on May 22, 2013, three former executives sued Carbon Motors for unpaid salaries.
