ZAP is a manufacturer of electric cars , electric scooters, electric bicycles, and electric quads in the United States , based in Santa Rosa . ZAP stands for Zero Air Pollution (in German about no air pollution ). The company is listed on the stock exchange.

With the majority stake in Zhejiang Jonway Automobile , it was reported that ZAP had changed its name to Zap Jonway . According to a document from 2016, the company ZAP is said to have remained independent, while Jonway has become part of the scope of consolidation.

The current status of the company is unclear. The company's website was last accessible in mid-2017.

history

ZAP was founded in 1994. In 1997, ZAP invented the Zappy, a small electric scooter, of which 2000 copies were sold in the following year thanks to prominent product placement. Due to poor management, the share price fell from $ 13 to $ 5.50 between December 1999 and April 2000. Due to falling sales and share prices (which plummeted to 21 US cents), ZAP entered bankruptcy proceedings in March 2002, which were completed in July of the same year.

In 2005, ZAP was 76,500 copies of the Smart at DaimlerChrysler in order to rebuild at this in electric vehicles. Since DaimlerChrysler had no confidence in the company's promises, it did not accept the contract. As a result, ZAP sued the German group for unfair competition. That lawsuit was dismissed in 2006.

ZAP also announced a market launch of the Brazilian Obvio for 2007 in 2005 , which presumably never took place. In 2007, ZAP founded the Dezhou Fulu Vehicle joint venture in cooperation with the Chinese manufacturer Shandong Jindalu Vehicle .

In 2008, ZAP's vehicles were referred to as Vaporware .

In January 2011, ZAP acquired a 51 percent stake in the Chinese automobile manufacturer Zhejiang Jonway Automobile and is said to have changed its name to Zap Jonway .

Models

ZAP Xebra

2007 ZAP Xebra sedan at the Chicago Auto Show

The Xebra was a three-wheeler that was manufactured as a four-door sedan and a two-door small delivery van. According to the manufacturer, it should reach a speed of around 65 km / h with a range of around 65 kilometers. Test reports, on the other hand, indicate a range of only 27 kilometers. An increased need for repairs was also criticized. Initially, the vehicle could not be registered in the US state of Massachusetts .

The delivery van version was also known as a Zaptruck .

According to its own press release from 2008, the vehicle was also registered for the UK. According to the company, the model was sold until 2011.

In 2013, ZAP was court compelled to recall and scrap 691 2008 model year vehicles manufactured by Qingqi Group Motorcycle due to inadequate brakes.

Alias and ZAP-X

The ZAP Alias was a three-wheeled vehicle model with an electric drive (two wheels in front, one in the back) and should have a range of over 160 km on one battery charge and a top speed of around 160 km / h.

In cooperation with Lotus Design , ZAP developed the four-door crossover sport utility vehicle ZAP-X. The launch of this model was questioned in 2007. It is unclear and doubtful whether either of these two models was ever mass-produced.

ZAPTRUCK

ZAPTRUCK XL

A four-wheeled delivery van was produced under the name ZAPTRUCK XL. The vehicle was manufactured by Wuling . It is based on the LZW6370.
