Corwin Manufacturing Company , previously the Vaughn Machine Company , was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The Vaughn Machine Company was based in Peabody , Massachusetts . In 1905 the production of automobiles began. The brand name was Gas-au-lec , short for gasoline, auxiliary and electric. The designer was Ralph Hood, who previously worked for the Simplex Motor Vehicle Company .

In 1906, Hamilton S. Corwin carried out a reorganization as president of the company. The new company name was Corwin Manufacturing Company . The brand name changed to Gasaulec . Production ended in the same year. A total of four vehicles were built.

A hybrid electric vehicle was on offer . The vehicle had a gasoline engine and an electric motor . The four-cylinder engine had a T-head , more than 7000 cm³ displacement and 40/45 hp . It drove the rear axle via a cardan shaft . On the one hand, the electric motor was intended for low speeds and reversing. On the other hand, it provided additional power that was needed on inclines, for example.

The chassis had a wheelbase of 274 cm . One illustration shows an open touring car .
