Marion-Handley was an American automobile brand.
prehistory
JI Handley was president of the 1914 closed American Motors Company in Indianapolis ( Indiana have been) (brand American Model American underslung ). He then went to the Willys-Overland Company and ran its subsidiary, Marion Motor Car Company , also in Indianapolis. After a massive financial crisis in the group, which almost led to its collapse, Handley organized the takeover of the Marion Motor Car Company in the summer of 1914 . With the separation from John North Willys , however, the sales channel via the Willys-Overland dealer network was no longer available.
Handley founded the Mutual Motors Company in Jackson ( Michigan ) in December 1914, a rescue company with the intention of producing a successor to the Marion passenger car, which was respected to the last . Shortly thereafter, a second automobile manufacturer was affiliated with the Imperial Automobile Company in Jackson. This was the manufacturer of a more locally known passenger car of the Imperial brand (there were several independent brands of this name). At the end of 1915, this production ran out, which suggests that Handley was not concerned with this company, but with its production facilities.
Marion-Handley
The Marion-Handley went on sale in the 1916 model year, initially as the K model, which was offered as a two-seater roadster and a five-seater touring . With a list price of US $ 1090 for each of the two variants, this six-cylinder was an attractive offer in the middle class of the time.
In 1917 the K was replaced by the 6-40, which was replaced by a larger 6-60. Both were available both as a - now four-seater - roadster and as a seven-seater touring. The prices were US $ 1275 for the 6-40 and US $ 1575 for the 6-60. In 1918 only the 6-60 remained in the program as a Touring; this at an unchanged price.
A total of 2083 Marion-Handley were produced in three model years :
- 1916: 726 copies
- 1917: 829 copies
- 1918: 526 copies
technology
The Marion-Handley was a very conventional automobile with reliable technology and was to be the successor to the well-known Marion . The cars were using water-cooled , side-valve Continental - six-cylinder engines equipped. In the K and the 6-40 they were registered with 22.5 tax horsepower and 40 power horsepower (according to NACC), the 6-60 was taxed with 29 horsepower and made 60.
The K and 6-40 models had a wheelbase of 3048 mm and the 6-60 model one of 3175 mm. The first Marion-Handley , Model K, was significantly smaller than the last Marion Model G and was only half the price. All Marion-Handley were so-called assembled cars , which were assembled from bought-in components. This was a common production method, but the market for such vehicles was increasingly poor. Wooden-spoke wheels were standard on the touring car, but wire-spoke wheels were available as an option on the roadster. The four-seater roadsters introduced in 1917 corresponded to contemporary tastes.
