Bailey Automobile Company , previously Bailey-Perkins Motor Company , was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

The brothers Julian L. and James A. Perkins developed a prototype in 1906 , which they called Perkins , but could not bring it to market due to lack of money. Together with the financier Bertram Bailey, they founded the Bailey-Perkins Motor Company in Springfield , Massachusetts in 1906 . Now the production of automobiles began, which were marketed as Bailey . It became the Bailey Automobile Company on February 12, 1907 when Henry G. Whitman and Willis L. Van Sicklin invested. Production ended in 1910.

There was no association with SR Bailey & Company , which used the same brand name.

The unusual thing was the rotary engine . In the prototype it was a four - cylinder two-stroke engine , in the series it was also a four-cylinder engine, whereby the two-stroke process is no longer mentioned.

In 1907 the engine developed 22 hp . The only model had a 254 cm wheelbase and a two-seater runabout body.

In the following years, a more powerful engine with 30/35 hp was used. In 1908 there was a five-seater touring car and a speedster , both with a 284 cm wheelbase.

For 1909 five- and seven-seat touring cars, three- and four-seat roadsters and a five-seat baby tonneau are named. The wheelbase remained unchanged.

In 1910, an Olympic touring car was the only body shape. The chassis now had a wheelbase of 290 cm.
