Stafford Motor Car Company was an American manufacturer of automobiles .

Company history

Terry Stafford had already made three prototypes between 1898 and 1902 . From 1903 he was superintendent of the Smith Automobile Company . It left this company in mid-1908.

In the same year he founded his own company. The seat was initially in Topeka , Kansas . He started with the production of automobiles. The brand name was Stafford . In 1910 he moved the headquarters to Kansas City , also in Kansas. Production ended in August 1915. A total of 499 vehicles were built.

The vehicles had a self-developed four-cylinder engine with water cooling . The OHC valve control was unusual . Up to 1911 the engines had a bore of 104.775 mm and a stroke of 111.125 mm , resulting in a displacement of 3832 cc . For 1912 and 1913, a stroke of 117.475 mm and a displacement of 4051 cm³ have been handed down. In 1914 the bore was increased to 107.95 mm and the stroke to 130.175 mm. That corresponded to a displacement of 4766 cm³. The engine output was always given as 30 hp . The cardan drive was common .

The chassis always had a wheelbase of 284 cm until 1914 . In 1914 it was lengthened slightly to 292 cm. In most cases, the bodies were open touring cars with five seats. There was also a roadster .

Harry S. Truman drove a 1913 Stafford for several years.
