Nash Four
The Nash Four is the name of a series of four-cylinder automobiles that the Nash Motors Company in Kenosha produced from 1921 to 1924. In the first year the vehicles were sold under the name Nash 40 as an inexpensive alternative to the Nash 680 .
Its chassis had a wheelbase of 112 inches (2845 mm). The overhead four-cylinder block engine was derived from the six-cylinder of the 680 and came with a displacement of 2719 cm³ (bore × stroke = 82.6 mm × 127 mm) and an output of 35 bhp (26 kW) at 2200 / min. on the market. The engine power was passed on to a three-speed gearbox (with center shift) and then to the rear wheels via a single-disc dry clutch. The mechanical outer band brakes worked on the rear wheels. As early as February 14, 1921, the displacement increased to 3299 cm³, the output rose to 36.75 bhp (27 kW). This had no influence on the prices.
In 1922, the Nash Four was the first series car to have a rubber engine mount. Similar to Willys-Overland , Nash had also come to the conclusion that the market for closed vehicles offered great growth opportunities if prices could be pushed down. Until then, they were between 50 and 100% higher than those of comparable open passenger cars. For this reason, Nash also launched a 2-door sedan called "Carriole" in the Series 40 in 1922, which was priced exactly between the Roadster ($ 1.025) and the Coupé ($ 1.645) at $ 1,350.
In the following years the Nash Four was built without any technical changes. Only a few special structures were added. In 1924 an electric clock was offered as an accessory for the first time in a production car. The model was discontinued at the end of this model year. Its role was taken over by the Ajax Six and its successor, the Nash Special Six , from 1926 .
