Du Pont Motors was an American automobile manufacturer that produced a small number of luxury vehicles in the period after the First World War .

Company history

Du Pont Motors was founded by E. Paul du Pont (1887–1950). The company was based in Moore , Pennsylvania . Du Pont initially manufactured marine engines that were supplied to the American Navy during the First World War. After the end of the war, the company switched to the automotive industry. The first automobile from Du Pont, the Model A , was presented in 1919.

The headquarters were in Wilmington , Delaware , from 1920 to 1930 and then in Springfield , Massachusetts , while the plant was in Moore, Pennsylvania from 1922 to 1925.

From 1928 the Model G was produced, which had a 5.3 liter, 125 hp eight-cylinder engine from Continental . The Model G chassis had a wheelbase of 3,657 mm. The Model G was like his predecessor as upper class vehicle with the vehicles from Cadillac , Packard or Dusenberg competed. In most cases, the Model G was delivered with Merrimac or Waterhouse bodies . The last vehicle from Du Pont Motors was the Model H presented in 1931 , which had a 3708 mm long wheelbase. Only three copies were made of him.

In 1932 Du Pont Motors went bankrupt. The insolvency was a long-term consequence of the global economic crisis . The company merged in 1933 with the Indian Motorcycle Company , which had previously been taken over by E. Paul Du Pont.

Du Pont in motorsport

Although Du Pont's cars were primarily luxury vehicles, individual cars were also used at motorsport events. During 1929 24 Hours of Le Mans Alfredo Luis Miranda and went Charles Moran Jr. with a Model G at the start. They dropped out after 20 laps.
