Charles Moran (born May 27, 1906 in New York City , † June 7, 1978 in Teasdale ) was an American entrepreneur and racing driver .

Family and work

Charles Moran worked as a sales representative for the Indian Motocycle Company in the early 1920s . After a few years at Indian, he moved to Du Pont Motors . First he also worked there in sales, then became a test driver and technical employee. As you Pont in 1932 as a late consequence of the global economic crisis in bankruptcy went, he was managing director and head of the racing department. After the end of World War II , he worked as a stockbroker at Francis I. Dupont and Co , a Wall Street financial services company .

Charles Moran was married twice and had five children. His private vehicles were usually Bentley , Ferrari and Maserati models , which he also used to drive to work on a regular basis.

Racing career

Charles Moran was the first American to compete as a driver in the Le Mans 24 Hours . As head of the racing department, he drove a Du Pont Model G Speedster Le Mans together with the French Alfredo Miranda in 1929 . The heavy and unwieldy car suffered from problems with the power transmission, which was defective after only 20 laps.

At the end of the 1940s, he resumed racing activities. He started again at Le Mans and achieved 10th overall in 1953, the best result in the final classification. He drove the Sebring 12 Hours and was a regular participant in the SCCA National Sports Car Championship .

After the end of his racing career he was President of the Sports Car Club of America and representative of the USA in the Fédération Internationale du Sport Automobile .
