description

Mathias Peter Møller (1854–1937), originally from Denmark , acquired a majority stake in Crawford Automobile Company, founded in 1904, in 1921 and introduced the Dagmar brand in 1922. In 1924 he renamed the company MP Moller Motor Car Company .

In 1926 a huge, seven-seater limousine was built for Moller himself, which Moller used in 1927 for an extended trip to Europe. This ended the production of complete automobiles in Hagerstown, taxi production in Framingham continued until 1931.

The company continued to manufacture taxi structures and special bodies for trucks upon customer request until the mid-1930s.

There is no business or family connection to the Moller Motor Company in Lewistown (Pennsylvania) and, for a short time, in Hagerstown (Maryland), which was also producing .

Dagmar

The six-cylinder model 6-70 Sport-Victoria (2-door touring car) was the sporty counterpart to the technically identical, more luxurious Crawford model 6-70. Both had the same 70 hp Continental in-line six-cylinder engine and the same wheelbase of 3505 mm. In contrast to the Crawford, Dagmar had angular shaped fenders made of flat sheet metal instead of the usual rounded ones. That was considered particularly chic at the time; But there were also less extravagant, rounded ones available.

Both models were initially manufactured in parallel at Crawford. Moller named the new car after his second daughter (Mary) Dagmar and probably also after Queen Dagmar of Bohemia, who was popular in Denmark . In memory of his old homeland Denmark, Dagmar wore the coat of arms of the Danish royal family until 1924 . Then it was no longer allowed to be used at the instigation of the Danish royal family. Another dispute arose with Packard , as Moller had red hexagons affixed to the Dagmar's hub covers, as they were trademarked by the Packard Motor Car Company . On the other hand, Packard could not take action against the almost even bolder copy of the radiator grille because it was not a registered trademark.

In 1923 most Dagmar were made in one production year with 135 copies.

In March 1924, Moller gave up the Crawford brand. The production of the Dagmar vehicles - all six-cylinder - was never economically justifiable and could only be sustained as the owner's "hobbyhorse" because his organ building company, which has been well established for many years, made enough profit.

Luxor Cab Manufacturing Company

Also in 1924 Moller invested with the New York businessmen Allie S. Freed and Mickey Heidt in a new company for the production of particularly luxurious taxis. The Luxor Cab Manufacturing Company was founded in Hagerstown, but after a few weeks it relocated production to Framingham ( Massachusetts ) to the facilities of the RH Long Company , manufacturer of the Bay State .

A few copies of the Luxor were completed in Hagerstown, but by far the largest part was built at the new home in Framingham. Production ended in 1927. The company also manufactured the Standish , a version of the Luxor for private customers , from 1924–1925 .

Taxi brands

Moller set up a car rental company and switched to the production of small series of taxis in order not to have to stop production of the Dagmar entirely. These were sold under different names. The brands Luxor and Standish , however, came from Luxor.

The large number of brands arose because some major customers requested vehicles with a brand name reserved exclusively for them. Outwardly and in terms of equipment, there were differences such as pointed or flat radiators, but these vehicles hardly differed technically.

The conventional and more or less the same chassis received Buda four-cylinder WTU engines with 226.4 ci (3710 cm³), later six-cylinder. In 1926 Möller switched to the Continental six-cylinder, which was also used for the Dagmar and the Standish . With the latter, an unsuccessful attempt was made in 1924 to derive a car from the Luxor . This was abandoned in 1925; the capacities that were freed up were used for the Elysee , which was manufactured as a van transporter specifically for the needs of upscale shops and was both a delivery van and an advertising medium.

Aristocrat

This brand existed from 1927 to 1931. The engine came from Buda.

Astor

This brand existed from 1925 to 1927. The wheelbase was 300 cm. A four-cylinder Buda engine powered the vehicles. The limousine and landaulet have survived. The Astor Cab Sales Company, Inc. of New York City marketed the vehicles. Many were sold to Philadelphia.

Blue light

This brand was introduced in 1927 and abandoned around 1931. A Buda engine powered the vehicles. The only sales market was Baltimore in Maryland.

Five-Boro

This was the first taxi brand. They existed from 1924 to 1927. The chassis had a 300 cm wheelbase. A Buda engine powered the vehicles. The vehicles were used in New York City. The name alludes to the five boroughs of New York (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island).

Paramount

The Paramount Cab Manufacturing Company from New York City marketed these vehicles from 1927 to 1931. They were luxurious. Some vehicles were also sold to private individuals as cars.

Great Paramount

These vehicles also existed from 1927 to 1931. They were the super-luxury version of the Paramount.

Twentieth Century

This brand existed from 1925 to around 1927. The main market was Philadelphia.
