Butler is the county seat of Butler County in the US state of Pennsylvania with approximately 15,000 inhabitants.

The city has an area of 7 km². It is in the middle of the county and is surrounded by the Butler Township .

The city is named after Maj. Gen. Named Richard Butler , who died in St. Clair's Battle in western Ohio in 1791. The first settlers were of Irish or Scottish descent and came from eastern Connecticut settlements . In 1802 a German emigrant, Detmar Basse , came to Jackson Township and founded the village of Zelienople the following year . He was followed in 1805 by Johann George Rapp with the Harmony settlement and then by many other German emigrants because the area reminded of Germany, is easily accessible by water and was blessed with good fields and coal deposits. In 1832 John A. Röbling established the city of Saxonburg; in the meantime Germans had settled down almost everywhere.
