Eric Namesnik

Eric John Namesnik (* 7. August 1970 in Butler , Pennsylvania ; † 11. January 2006 in Ypsilanti , Michigan ) was a US -American swimmer . From the beginning of the 1990s he was one of the best medley swimmers in the world.

Namesnik was a member of the University of Michigan swim team from 1989 to 1993 . His breakthrough to the international top came in 1991 when he won the silver medal at the swimming world championships in Perth in the 200 and 400 meter medley. At the Olympic Games in 1992 and 1996 , he won silver in the 400 meter medley. In between, he won bronze over 400 meters at the 1994 World Championships . Namesnik was the first US swimmer to break the 4:15:00 minute mark over 400 meters. Overall, he managed to improve the US record over this route four times in his career.

After finishing his active career, he worked at the University of Michigan as an assistant to swimming coach Jon Urbanchek . On January 7, 2006, Namesnik had a serious accident with his car in Pittsfield Township on an icy road. Four days later, at the age of 35, he succumbed to his injuries.

Namesnik leaves behind a wife and two children.
